How to bleep out words in CapCut

CapCut has no button that bleeps words for you, but it has everything needed to do it by hand: the Split tool, a volume control and a library of sound effects. The same idea works in the phone app and in CapCut for desktop, though the buttons sit in different places.

If the video has more than a few swear words, the automatic way further down this page is quicker: BleepItOut finds the words for you and you only check them.

Skip the manual steps: bleep the words automatically

Bleep a word in CapCut by hand

  1. Open your project and play the video until you reach the word. If you turn on auto captions, the words appear as text on the timeline, which makes them faster to find.
  2. Put the playhead at the start of the word and tap Split, then move to the end of the word and split again. The word is now a short clip of its own.
  3. Select that short clip and set its volume to 0. The picture stays; only the sound of the word is gone.
  4. Add the beep: open the audio menu, go to sound effects and search for beep or censor. Or import the free 1 kHz beep from our sound page as an audio file.
  5. Drag the beep along its audio track so it starts where the word starts, then trim it to the same length.
  6. Repeat for every word, play the whole video once to check it, and export.

Tips that save time in CapCut

Zoom into the timeline before you split: a swear word often lasts less than half a second, and a split a few frames late lets the first sound through.

Once one beep is trimmed, copy it and paste it at the next word instead of searching the library again.

If the word is said over music, muting the clip also mutes the music for that moment. That is normal: the beep fills the gap.

When the manual way is too slow

Every word costs about four actions: find it, split twice, mute, place the beep. A ten-minute vlog with twenty swear words means eighty careful edits, and it is easy to miss one.

Faster: bleep the words automatically

Upload the video you exported from CapCut, or the original clip. BleepItOut transcribes the speech, marks the swear words with their exact timing and puts a beep over each one. You check the list, change anything you want and download the file, then carry on editing in CapCut if you like.

Questions and answers

How do you do the beep thing on CapCut?

Split the clip at the start and the end of the word, set the volume of that short piece to 0, and place a beep sound effect on the audio track over it. Repeat for each word.

What is the censor beep sound in CapCut called?

There is no single official name. Search the sound effects library for beep, bleep or censor and pick a short tone. The classic censor beep is a 1 kHz tone, and you can download one for free on our sound page.

Can I bleep out words automatically instead?

Yes. Upload the video to BleepItOut: it finds the swear words and places the beeps, and you check them before downloading. In CapCut you place each beep yourself.

How do I bleep out words in CapCut on PC?

The steps are the same in CapCut for Windows and Mac: split the clip at both ends of the word (select the clip and press Ctrl+B on Windows or Cmd+B on Mac), set the volume of that piece to 0, and drag a beep from the sound effects onto the track below.

Can I mute a word in CapCut without a beep?

Yes. Split the word out, set its volume to 0 and skip the beep. Silence suits interviews and calmer videos; a beep makes it clear that something was removed.

Will my video lose quality if I use BleepItOut too?

No. BleepItOut copies the picture without re-encoding it and replaces only the sound of the covered words, so you can bring the file back into CapCut as it is.
