How to bleep swear words in a YouTube video
YouTube's advertiser-friendly guidelines count bleeping or muting a swear word as "obscured profanity". BleepItOut does that job for you: it listens to your finished video, flags the swear words and covers each one with a beep.

How it works
- Drag your exported video onto the box above, or choose it from your computer. MP4, MOV and WebM files work.
- Wait while BleepItOut listens to the speech. The longer the video, the longer this takes.
- In the editor, play through the highlighted words. Remove a highlight that is not a swear word, and add a word the detector missed.
- Pick the beep or another sound and render the result.
- Download the file and upload it to YouTube. The picture is copied as it is, so the video quality does not drop; only the audio changes.
What YouTube's guidelines say about swearing
YouTube's page on advertiser-friendly content says that profanity or vulgarity at the start or throughout the majority of a video may not be suitable for advertising. It also says that abbreviated or obscured profanity can earn ad revenue, and it defines obscured profanity as bleeping or muting the word, or covering written words with black bars or symbols.
Stronger profanity (like f***) in a title or thumbnail limits or removes ads, whatever you do inside the video. A bleep fixes the audio only, so the title and thumbnail are yours to check.
The rules change and YouTube decides case by case, so read the current version before you rely on it.
Before you publish
Listen to the result once from start to finish. The detector finds most swear words, but it can miss one in fast speech or with noise behind it, which is what the review in the editor is for.
Questions and answers
Does bleeping swear words help me earn ad revenue on YouTube?
It can. YouTube's guidelines treat a bleep as obscured profanity, and obscured profanity can earn ad revenue under those guidelines. No video is guaranteed ads, though, and the final decision is YouTube's.
Can you swear on YouTube and still be monetized?
The guidelines say profanity at the start or throughout the majority of a video may not be suitable for advertising. Covering the swear words with a bleep is one way to lower that risk, but it does not remove it.
Does YouTube treat a bleep as "obscured profanity"?
Yes. The guidelines define obscured profanity as bleeping or muting the word, as well as covering written words with black bars, symbols or text.
Does swearing in the title or thumbnail still limit ads?
Yes. According to the guidelines, moderate profanity in a title or thumbnail can limit ads and stronger profanity can remove them. BleepItOut changes the audio only, so write a clean title and thumbnail.
How do I bleep out curse words on YouTube without editing software?
Upload the video to BleepItOut in your browser, check the highlighted words and download the new file. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
Does bleeping reduce my video quality?
No. BleepItOut copies the video stream without re-encoding it and replaces only the audio, so the picture stays the same.
