Censor beep sound effect: free MP3 and WAV
This is the classic censor beep, the bleep sound effect TV and radio use to cover a word: a clean 1 kHz tone, three seconds long, made by BleepItOut and released into the public domain. Play it below, then download the beep sound effect as an MP3 for phone editors or as a WAV for editing.
Ten funny recorded sounds are here too (a toy horn, quacks, a boing, a record scratch, a sad trombone, an air horn, a fart, a kazoo, a zipper and a goat), for when a plain beep is not the joke you want.

Questions and answers
What is the bleep sound effect called?
It is usually called a censor beep, a bleep or simply a beep sound effect: the short tone that replaces a word on TV, radio and online video so the word cannot be heard. The most familiar one is a steady 1 kHz sine tone, which is the file offered on this page.
Can I use the file in YouTube videos and commercial projects?
Yes. BleepItOut generated the sound from a plain sine wave, without any third-party sample, and released it under CC0. You can use it in any video, including monetized and commercial ones, with no credit and no permission.
Should I download WAV or MP3?
Take the WAV when you are editing: it is uncompressed, so nothing is lost. The MP3 is much smaller and is fine for quick jobs and phone editors.
Can I get funny censor sounds too, like a duck, a horn or a sad trombone?
Yes. Ten recorded sounds are listed under the beep, each with a preview and a WAV download. They come from Freesound under CC0, so they are free to use too, and they are the same sounds the BleepItOut editor offers as censor effects.
How do I bleep only the swear words automatically?
Upload the video or audio file on this page. BleepItOut transcribes it, flags the swear words with their timing, you check the list and pick the sound, and you download the finished file. Free minutes are limited each day.
How long is the file and can I loop it?
It is three seconds long. The ends fade in and out over 10 milliseconds, so there are no clicks; repeating it end to end leaves a very short dip at each join, which is hardly audible under speech.
